Engineering Chemistry

About the Book Engineering Chemistry is designed for diploma engineering students to develop a strong foundation in the fundamental concepts of chemistry and their applications in engineering. The book follows the prescribed syllabus and focuses on understanding chemical principles, engineering materials, their properties and applications, electrochemical processes, and environmental protection. The content is presented in a systematic and student-friendly manner to help learners understand the concepts required for their academic studies as well as their practical relevance to engineering fields. Chapters Covered Chapter 1 – Atomic Structure Introduces the fundamental structure of the atom, including atomic particles, atomic number, mass number, isotopes and isobars. It covers Bohr’s theory, orbitals, Hund’s rule, Aufbau principle, electronic configuration, valency, octet and duplet rules, and the formation of electrovalent and covalent compounds. Chapter 2 – Electrochemistry Explains the basic concepts of ionisation, electrolytic dissociation, Arrhenius theory, conductors, electrolytes and electrolysis. The chapter covers electrodes, electrode potential, electrochemical series, electrolysis of important solutions, Faraday’s laws with numerical problems, electrochemical cells and batteries, along with applications such as electroplating, electrorefining, electrometallurgy and electrotyping. Chapter 3 – Metals and Alloys Provides an introduction to metals, their occurrence and metallurgy. It discusses minerals, ores, gangue, flux and slag, along with important mechanical properties of metals and the stages involved in metal extraction. Commonly used engineering metals and important ferrous and non-ferrous alloys are also covered with their composition, properties and applications. Chapter 4 – Non-Metallic Materials Introduces important non-metallic engineering materials, particularly plastics, rubber and thermal insulating materials. The chapter covers addition and condensation polymerisation, thermosoftening and thermosetting plastics, processing and engineering applications, natural and synthetic rubber, vulcanisation, and materials such as thermocole, glass wool, asbestos and cork. Chapter 5 – Environmental Effects Develops awareness of the effects of pollution on the environment and human life. It covers pollution and pollutants, air pollution, sources and effects of pollutants, control of air pollution, pollution caused by internal combustion engines, deforestation, ozone depletion and greenhouse effects. Water pollution, domestic and industrial waste, BOD, COD, biomedical waste, e-waste and preventive environmental management are also discussed. Why This Book?
